Want to get to grips with life underwater? Then why not give snorkelling a try!
This water sport goes by a variety of names, including the simple FMS (Fins, Mask, Snorkel): but however you want to call it, we’re talking about snorkeling ! This fun aquatic activity is not only easy to practise, it’s something that anyone can do, from children to adults ! Still hesitating ? Subea gives you 10 good reasons to take up snorkeling !
Snorkeling is a simple and fun activity that can easily be enjoyed by the whole family - children, parents and even grandparents ! All that’s required is that snorkelers must know how to swim and be moderately comfortable in the water. A few accessories, such as buoys, inflatable noodles and even a vest can provide the youngest children with some extra buoyancy, so that they won’t get tired as quickly and will be able to enjoy the water for a longer period of time.
A pair of fins (optional for beginners who may prefer aquashoes while learning proper fin technique).
As well as this basic FMS (Fins, Mask, Snorkel) kit, you can also include other snorkelling equipment, such as a top or a snorkeling shorty that will protect you from the cold and avoid any contact with the seabed. If you don’t feel very comfortable with a mask and snorkel, try Subea’s Easybreath full-face mask. This innovative product allows you to breathe underwater through both your nose and your mouth. If you prefer not to put your head underwater, you can still enjoy the snorkeling experience with Olu, our new observation buoy that will enable you to explore and observe the seabed without getting your head wet !
Because it requires only minimal equipment that doesn’t take up a lot of room, snorkelling (unlike surfing or windsurfing) is a perfect aquatic activity to enjoy while on vacation, whether you’re travelling by car, train or plane ! And what other activity can you so easily enjoy as a family ? Because naturally, that’s part of vacation as well.
Snorkeling allows anyone to have fun quickly and at no risk. There’s no need for hours of training before giving it a try : it’s instant fun from the very first time you get in the water ! Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t necessary to dive deep underwater in order to admire the aquatic flora and fauna… You can start while staying on the surface. A thousand wonders await you !
Get ready for astonishing aquatic experiences just with a simple FMS kit. The underwater world represents 70% of our planet: a world that’s often unknown to us humans. That’s why we find it so fascinating. It’s full of life, colours, shapes and unexpected encounters – and thrilling to talk about with the family as you head back up the beach! The best thing for enjoying the show ? Clear and relatively shallow water… You’ll feel as though you’re swimming in a real aquarium!
For safety, it’s important for snorkeling beginners to go out as a group. But you’ll soon discover that snorkeling is a perfect opportunity for sharing unforgettable moments with friends and family. And all in a special universe !
Though snorkeling is often enjoyed as a leisure activity or while on vacation, it’s still a sport, just like jogging or cycling. It still takes effort, too: every time you kick your fins, you burn calories, work your heart and your abdominal muscles, tone up your legs and keep in shape. This allows you to combine pleasure and physical activity, without even realising it and while being easy on your body. And you won’t get all hot and sweaty, even in the summer! Not bad, wouldn’t you say ?
You might not see the link between snorkeling and relaxation, but that’s only because you haven’t yet had your first snorkeling experience! Snorkeling can provide you with a uniquely relaxing experience, completely different to our life on land. Here, there’s no competition, no performance, no pushing yourself. Far removed from the stress of our daily routine… It’s time to relax ! Your only job is to move around and observe the underwater marvels that surround you.
When snorkeling, you have to breathe through a snorkel, keep your balance in the water and get around using fins. These are all necessary prerequisites if you’re thinking about trying scuba diving later on. But even though these two activities share some things in common, they’re still quite different from one another! For scuba diving, an introduction and training provided by professionals are essential. Are you ready to take the next step and give scuba diving a try ? Here’s our advice for making the transition easy!
As you’ve now understood, snorkeling is an activity that’s perfect for all swimmers and all budgets. But there are still certain basic safety rules that have to be followed, in order to enjoy the marine world safely:
