What is Eating Clean?

Eating clean means to consume products that are close to their natural form, minimally processed, or not processed at all. This helps you to feed your body with the right kind of nutrients and vitamins minus the preservatives. An easy way to start eating clean is to consume whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Purchasing ethically sourced produce and sustainable goods is another important factor. The "eating clean" lifestyle has proven to be environmentally friendly, thus reducing your carbon footprint.

 Why eat clean?

Feeding your body with junk food and highly processed foods does more harm than good and contributes to making you feel lethargic and overtime a whole lot of medical complications. The statement "You are what you eat" is a simple way to explain and emphasize why eating clean is important. It doesn't mean that the food is dirty, it simply means that processing them kills all the present goodness.

Here are some simple ways that you can follow to start eating clean.

  • Eat more fruits and vegetables

The internet, books, and magazines are swarming with information on why we should consume more fruits and vegetables in our daily diet. All the goodness and freshness from a great bowl of fruit or vegetable salad is divine but eating clean starts right from how it is purchased and your local market is the way to go. This cuts down on all the labels and separate bags used to weigh in the produce and also ensures its ethically sourced not only are you fueling your body with goodness but also being a little kinder to mother earth.

  • Read labels

Purchasing a bag of chips with "healthy and made with whole grains" isn't eating clean but just an illusion provided by all the companies that market such products. The moment you flip your bag of chips you'll start to spiral due to all the complicating 15 letter words and difficult to pronounce chemicals and preservatives. So spend a little extra time reading the labels, here is something you should look out for if the packaging states that it's "healthy" if the list of all the healthy ingredients is at the bottom of the list it means that very little to no amount of that was used in making the product.

  • Healthy substitutes for everyday products

Salt, sugar, tea, coffee, and spices are some of the basic things you'll find in every household but a lot of these products are highly processed so finding healthy alternatives is important, for example, rock salt or pink Himalayan salt instead of table salt. Black jaggery, stevia, wild honey instead of refined sugar. Whole spices instead of pre-ground spices. Tea and coffee without the added preservatives. All of these healthy substitutes are easy to find and consume.

  • Substitute refined carbs with vegetables and fruits

A little of everything is a good practice when it's hard to completely go healthy but you still want to incorporate some healthy practices. Here are a few substitutes, you could use cauliflower and grate it to mimic rice or use it as your pizza base instead of white rice and refined flour. Use peeled vegetables as a natural replacement for pasta, you could use vegetables like zucchini or gourds and squashes to mimic pasta.

  • Consume liquids in their natural form

Resort to water, fruit juices, and vegetable juices rather than purchasing pre-juiced products loaded with sugar and preservatives. All of those tetra packs and plastic water bottles add to your carbon footprint and add to the already existing waste. If you do have to purchase pre-juiced products make sure to recycle them by discarding it in bins dedicated to recycling plastic bottles. Always carry your water bottle as store-bought water bottles have added sugar and high acidic levels.

  • Making and Baking

We all love to snack, be it while binge-watching Netflix or just to pass a lazy day, Normally we would reach for a bag of chips or a box of cookies but meal prepping your snack pantry every week can help you make healthier choices, for example, stocking up on nuts, finding healthy easy to make snack recipes, baking instead of frying, etc.

Adapting to this lifestyle is a personal choice and shows some tremendous results. Eating clean is food for the mind, body, and soul, it helps one stay active and provides you with healthy body composition and stable mental health. Having a diet that was unmonitored and tumultuous is unhealthy, So If you are looking for a change in your lifestyle and eating habits do give this a try.
