The rod is the crucial element here. Long casts and extreme sensitivity are what you need. As the fish are cautious, the bites will be tentative. The rod has to let you feel them perfectly.
For shore fishing choose a rod 2m70 - 3m90 long. These lengths will let you cast further.
If you're fishing from a boat, use a 1m30 - 2m40 rod. These lengths will give you greater mobility.
Choose a casting weight to suit the sinker you're using. It's marked (in grams) on the scion of the rod, below the first ring after the reel. Some rods are sold with multiple scions, adaptable to all situations.
The reel doesn't need to hold more than 300m. 2500 - 4000 reels are ideally suited to this type of fishing. If your reel hasn't had anti-corrosion treatment, don't forget to rinse it after your fishing trip.
Nylon line 20/100 - 30/100 is the preferred choice.. Its elasticity helps stop the wave action masking bites, and helps you to lose fewer fish during the play by absorbing the headshakes.
If your fishing site has slight abrasion risks (fine-grained rock or sand to rub on your line), use Fluorocoated nylon, which will protect it from abrasion damage for longer.
If your site has major abrasion risks (shells or sharp rocks), use specialised Abrasion nylon, which will resist abrasion for much longer.
The leader colour should blend with the surroundings and the hook should be substantial. Choose a fluorocarbon leader 25/100 to 35/100. and a hook n°8 - n°10, depending on the size of your bait. We advise a length of 50cm - 1.20m.
The most versatile is the slide rig. You can use it to catch fish of all kinds. Choose the size of your hook according to the size of your bait. (the bigger the bait, the bigger the hook can be).
