Who said that you can only scuba dive in the open water? It might not seem like it, but diving in a swimming pool actually offers a number of advantages. For one, diving enthusiasts can continue to train during the “winter break”. With most swimming pools open year-round, you could use this time to train, to refine your technique or to explore another way of learning.
Read on as Subea shares some fun training activities - who knows, you might end up looking at pool diving in a whole new way!
Stay fit !
First, scuba diving in a swimming pool is a good way to still keep training event in winter time... It's also a great opportunity to improve your skills and get your diving certifications. Scuba diving in a swimming pool allow you to keep your physical condition, instead of stop your activity in the winter...
The main goal? Having fun!
In addition to the “physical” aspect of scuba diving, diving clubs also offer fun activities that will help you to improve your diving technique. Buoyancy, propulsion, breathing: there’s something for every skill level, from beginners to the most experienced divers. By adding a fun side to your training sessions, you’ll reduce the stress or anxiety that can sometimes occur during dive training, making your underwater experience much more enjoyable.
What’s more, joining a dive club and taking part in pool sessions will give you an opportunity to meet other divers and to make new friends. Diving clubs are also a great way to organise outings or dive weekends, and to become part of a dive group with people who share your interests.
A FEW FUN EXERCISES FOR PRACTISING IN THE POOL
Whether you’re a complete beginner or a diving expert, try these fun tips!
As the name indicates, this involves playing a game of dominoes while holding your position underwater - without touching the bottom of the pool! This exercise will help you perfect your underwater “hovering”, allowing you to work on your balance and your breathing. Don’t forget, though: you’ll need a weighted set of dominoes!
To play this game, you’re going to need a frisbee specially designed for underwater use. The idea is to maintain your depth while passing the frisbee in full diving gear, but without either touching the bottom or surfacing. The goal here? Keeping your balance for as long as possible.
For this activity, you’re going to need plastic rackets and a solid plastic ball. The idea here is to pass the ball as many times as possible between you and your partner, without surfacing or touching the bottom of the pool. If the ball touches the bottom or reaches the surface, your opponent scores a point. Underwater tennis is primarily used for working on your lung ballast, as well as your balance and breathing.
It’s possible to play football underwater! All you need is a ball filled with pressurized salt water.
After that, all you have to do is pass the ball between your team as often as possible, while keeping the ball off the bottom of the pool.
For this game, the diver has to knock down a series of bowling pins stood on the bottom of the pool, either with the help of an underwater frisbee or a solid plastic ball. The aim of this exercise is mainly to work on your finning and on maintaining your depth level.
For this, you’re going to need a spoon and a ping-pong ball. The aim here is to get from one side of the pool to the other, spoon in hand and without letting the ball get away. Depending on the rules, this game can either be a race against your partner (the first one to get to the other side of the pool wins), or you can try running a relay race with small teams.
(well, almost!)
Of course, this isn’t an exhaustive list of the fun exercises that you can practice in the swimming pool. Other fun activities include basketball and even underwater hockey! To get started, we’d recommend getting in touch with your local diving club, so that you can learn more about the types of exercises they organise for members.
