After completing my Advanced Mountaineering Course, my friend and I decided to try all the other adventure sports that are out there. Skiing was one of them. When I went for my 14 days course, I loved the entire experience of skiing and being on the snow.
Surprisingly I got the best technique award in the graduation ceremony.
That very day I knew this is something I'd like to pursue and would want to do it s every year no matter what. Hence, I immediately booked for the Intermediate session for next season.
I am doing courses right now so I don't have any personal gear yet.
Everyone goes crazy in the snow irrespective of age. Your first instinct is to play around and try new things. I remember this one time when our instructor left us for a while on the slope and gave us the freedom to go downhill as many times as we wanted. It was also the first time, we got the chance to click some pictures and just enjoy ourselves. That day was really fun, we also got to try snowboarding and side swings.
The most necessary and important technique to start with. If you manage to control the snow plough, it can save you from many situations and injuries.
When you fall and if the ski is tight, it’s never going to come out. I fell after an uphill swing, the inner side of my knee hit the metallic edge of the ski.
It’s not very difficult to reach Gulmarg. Take a direct Taxi from Srinagar Airport or a Local Bus stop and then change the bus at Tanmarg. The road is very clear and well maintained.
Gulmarg has a lot of hostels and hotels. If you're going for the IISM course, then you can directly go to the IISM building and they have all the amenities. Every hotel and hostel there have electric blankets and hot water.
If you're on a low budget but have time in your hand then go for IISM but if you don’t want to waste a lot of time, hire a private instructor.
For all the beginners it’s better to start with a professional and trained instructor. Hence, Ski courses are the best way to start. Once you feel confident enough, the next time you can go alone.
It’s not about how fast you can go with the ski but how much you can control the ski
I've only Skied in Gulmarg. would love to go to Manali soon
Skiing is thrilling and dangerous at the same time. it’s like riding a bike downhill but with very less control. The adrenaline rush in your veins is what I go for.
