Muscular? No, it helps women build lean muscles. Many women avoid using whey protein because they think it will make them “bulk up.” This is probably because whey protein has been traditionally marketed to men as a muscle.  The built of women are very different from men. The hormonal structure is different. If you ask me what whey proteins do to women's bodies, I would say it makes women tinier but stronger.

When women start to lift weights and engage in strength training, their body becomes lean and toned as opposed to men who become heavier. In order to support muscle-build up with strength training, whey proteins play a role here (But this doesn't mean that you should stop eating wholesome food and substitute it with supplements.)

Your overall diet and workout regime play a bigger role in the amount of muscle mass you build.

Are there any side effects of Whey Proteins?

There are no side effects of Whey Proteins per se. I consider it the best and the safest supplement since it is processed and made out of milk.

However, anything in excess is injurious to health. So do not consume it in excess or make it a replacement for food. A lot of people stop eating organic food and start taking supplements instead. This is something I completely don't recommend. Your body needs organic food as much as you need proteins. You cannot completely rely on supplements for your diet. There has to be wholesome food in it too.

Whey proteins before or after a workout?

Post-workout  - The consumption of whey protein post-workout helps in repair of muscles. Endurance activities cause muscles to break during training. This is called Hypertrophy.

Right after your workout when you're drained out and tired, the right supplement helps to replenish your muscles and gain muscle mass as it is easily absorbed by your body compared to any other kind of organic food.  The faster you supply the right protein, the results are better.

Pre-workout - Whey proteins before a workout is a source of energy.

It should be majorly used as a post-workout intake.
