While it's a fairly common occurrence, if not dealt with can be very life limiting. Water is an essential commodity in human life and imagine not being able to use and enjoy it to its full potential.

6 Activities to get Comfortable in the Swimming Pool

Don’t bother with the techniques of freestyle or backstroke until you’ve dealt with the panic. Start slow. There's no need for tension, worry or quick movements. Start getting used to the feeling of water on your skin, allow yourself to feel in control before you take your first dive.

You won't want to initially but once you've passed the above stage, try the below activities to slowly ease out your mind and body and finally feel comfortable in the water.

  1. The Secret to Treading Water Effortlessly

Treading water is the first thing you should learn before you swim. It's a position where your body stays upright and not vertical (which would mean that you're swimming, not treading) with your head above the surface while you move your arms and legs to keep yourself afloat.

Stay calm and slow your breathing.

This exercise will help you become more confident in the water. For safety, we advise you to have someone accompany you.

  1. How to float on your back

Knowing how to float is incredibly useful when learning to swim. Floating on your back is also the easiest to pick up and a useful position because this position allows you to breathe without using your energy to stay on the surface of the water.

The more trust you have while trying the position, the easier it will be to feel relaxed and light.

For safety reasons, we advise you to do this exercise in the presence of someone who can swim.

  1. How to propel yourself forward

When you first try to propel yourself in water, you need a solid base to push off or give you that push similar to how some of us use a wall to propel yourself further when practicing skateboarding. In the pool, you can either use the wall or the bottom of the pool (If you're feeling more confident in the water)

For your safety, we recommend that you have someone who can swim accompany you when you do these exercises

  1. How to Breathe when swimming

Breathing in water is an essential part of learning to swim and once you learn it, you will feel more at east when in the water. Breathing consists of two parts, breathing in and breathing out. When we swim, we breathe in through our mouth and exhale from our nose, contrary to that on land. Breathing exercises help you understand how to breathe better while swimming.

For safety reasons, we advise you to try this exercise in the presence of someone who can swim.

  1. How to avoid breathing in water through your nose

If you want to prevent water from going into your nose, you have to practice to avoid breathing in through your nose. The trick is a simple one. Whenever your head is underwater, just breath out gently through your nose, not rapidly otherwise you will lose breath and panic. That's it. It takes some practice though.
