READ MOREWhether you want a compact or more bulky jacket, whether you're hiking or stopping for a rest, in cold or very cold temperatures, choosing the right down jacket is not always easy...Read our advice to help you make the right choice!
THERE ARE 2 CRITERIA THAT DETERMINE YOUR CHOICE OF DOWN JACKET: THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE AND THE INTENSITY OF YOUR EXERCISE.
The first question to ask when choosing a winter jacket is: in what temperature will it be used? In essence, all our winter jackets are tested to guarantee excellent comfort according to extremely accurate temperature ranges when hiking. To offer such a guarantee, our tests are completed under 5 km/h walking conditions, a light 5 km/h wind and with a full winter outfit: fleece underneath, pair of gloves, warm trousers, socks and hat.
FOR VERY COLD WEATHER (BELOW -10°C)
Bulkier down jackets have thicker padding which traps more air and protects you better from the cold.
FOR COLD WEATHER (TEMPERATURES ABOVE -10°C)
Our range of micro-down jackets are better suited to warmer temperatures as they have less padding, making them lighter and more compact than bulkier winter jackets.
Intense hiking refers to an activity requiring sustained effort (for example, because of changes in elevation). When on an intense hike or when hiking for several days, we recommend choosing a compact and light down jacket. Its compactness means it can be stored in a small pouch or in one of the jacket pockets so it can be carried easily in a backpack and used to keep you warm when you stop to rest.
On shorter, less intense hikes, you'll be able to wear the down jacket so you should choose a less compact model.
Our down jackets are water repellent and not waterproof so we recommend that you wear a waterproof jacket or poncho on top in case it rains.
